The club, with more than 100 members, has two primary tractors for grooming and one emergency reserve tractor, Potter said. Trails are inspected by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Mon Mon 12/13 (Weather Permitting)   Snowmobile Trails Officially Opened  in Iron County and the City of Hurley. There are 304 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Iron County. The White Thunder Riders Snowmobile Club grooms the northern half of the county, while the Mercer Sno-goers groom the southern half, from 310 Road South to the county lines. Each club is responsible for about 133 miles which includes signing, brushing and grooming. The Iron County Forestry Department grooms 38 miles of trails 6 and 7 through the Penokee Range. Boondocking / Off-trail snowmobile use OK in Iron County forests -  off-trail snowmobiling on the Iron County forest, on logging roads and trails that are not gated, signed or bermed. Snowmobilers will not be allowed on active timber sales without permission from the logger. (That holds true for hunters, firewood and bough cutters or any other person recreating in the forest.) Snowmobilers will be able to enjoy the ungroomed, untouched virgin snow that the area can provide over a vast area to explore the wilderness. Off-trail snowmobilers, also known as boondockers, use GPS, plat books, aerial photos and other maps available to explore the forest during the winter. Iron County boasts 173,000 acres of county forest with approximately 3,000 acres logged each year, the majority of logging during frozen or winter conditions. That leaves about 170,000 acres for recreation. The coounty receives more than 200 inches of snow on average each season. Neighboring Gogebic County in the Upper Peninsula also has forests open to off-road snowmobiling. http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/
